The dermal fillers we use at Pom Pom are made from a natural substance with extraordinary properties. Hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide (complex sugar) and is naturally found in several parts of our bodies, such as our joints, our eyes, and in particularly high concentrations in our skin.

It has an important biological function, as it helps stimulate collagen synthesis and tissue repair but one of the greatest functions of hyaluronic acid is its role in moisture balance. It is a natural humectant and balances any water loss from our skin, helping the skin to stay young and fresh looking. Alongside hyaluronic acid, our body also produces two proteins, collagen and elastin, which also work together to help keep our skin tissue firm and elastic.

In our late twenties, the production of these proteins starts to slow down and as we continue to age, the content of hyaluronic acid also decreases, causing the elasticity of our skin to reduce, to become drier, and it is then that fine lines and wrinkles appear. With a reduction of these two proteins and hyaluronic acid, in conjunction with facial fat pad reduction, reduced muscle tone, and the effects of gravity, our face begins to display the typical signs of ageing (things like sunken cheeks, hollow eyes, deep lines and wrinkles) as it now has a reduced ability to keep the skin tissue strong and supple.

It can be a sad and salutary realisation as we look in the mirror or catch a glimpse of our face in a shop window, when suddenly the person in the reflection is not the person you recognise.
