Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a powerful and natural way of promoting skin rejuvenation. It has been widely used in aesthetic medicine in the UK, for facial rejuvenation in selected patients with environmental and natural ageing for over a decade.
PRP is a form of cosmetic injectable treatment that uses our patient’s own platelet rich plasma. The plasma component of blood contains stem cells and growth rich platelets, also known as thrombocytes. When injected back into the skin, the platelets help revitalise the skin and can help regenerate damaged tissue. It also accelerates the body’s natural production of collagen and elastin to provide overall skin rejuvenation.
A small sample of your blood is taken from your arm, just like when you have a routine blood test. This blood, in a test tube, is spun in a centrifuge for about 10 minutes, to separate the beneficial PRP from the rest of the whole blood components.
The straw coloured plasma contains growth factors and other regenerative molecules, which, once injected back in to your skin, encourage collagen and elastin formation, as well propagating cellular growth, improving local blood supply and hydrating the skin. This results in younger, fresher and more evenly toned skin over time, with a reduction in wrinkles. It may also help reduce the visibility of scars.
PRP can be used to help with sun damaged skin, acne scars, stretch marks, skin texture and tone, hair loss, loss of glow, fine lines and dark circles. Visible results may take between 2 – 6 weeks to achieve depending on the individual, and factors such as general health, age, diet, smoking and skin type. Repeating the PRP procedure, ideally three times, each month apart can help to achieve more refined and dramatic results. PRP is commonly performed on the face, neck and chest, and can also be used to promote hair growth when injected in to the scalp.
• Around the eyes – Peri-orbital rim
• Cheeks and mid face
• Cheeks
• Thinning skin on the neck
• Jaw line and sub-malar (cheek hollows)
• Backs of hands
• Décolletage
• Other body areas – knees, elbows, upper arms, post baby tummy
PRP can be combined with our micro-needling procedure and we commonly use this technique in clinic. This is a micro-needling technique when we use our TGA approved eDermapen, which helps to push the PRP into the skin at exact and precise depths, enhancing the effects of the PRP treatment, whilst also generating a collagen induction therapy healing cascade.
Clinical evidence suggests that combining PRP treatments with other rejuvenation techniques, such as micro-needling, meso therapy and dermal fillers, induces a synergistic and beneficial effect.
If this treatment is suitable for you
• Be well hydrated 48 hours leading up to the procedure
• Reduce your fat intake
• Reduce your alcohol and caffeine intake for 48 hours
• Stop all omega supplements, green teas and any other medication that may increase bruising, such as ibuprofen.
PRP treatment is generally very well tolerated, as it is an autologous ( from your own body) product being re-introduced to your body. Uncommon side- effects may include local irritation or redness, and occasionally swelling.
A consultation is required to see if you are suited to a PRP procedure, and unfortunately, there are some illnesses or conditions which preclude PRP treatment, but we will discuss this during your consultation.
I couldn't recommend Pom Pom Aesthetics enough. The level of care, thought, and professionalism is outstanding.
Many people worry about having a frozen face after having wrinkle-relaxing treatments. It was one of my biggest fears, but Penny assured me that my face had a small amount of movement, and yet I looked refreshed and younger. It was my first experience, and I was so happy, I will be back in three months time.
Penny from Pom Pom Aesthetics has been my go-to aesthetic practitioner. I trust this clinic and highly recommend their services.
