PDO threads are an increasingly popular treatment choice in non-surgical facial rejuvenation. Originally developed in Korea around 9 years ago, they have now become an available and popular treatment in Australia.
Both mono and long PDO thread procedures are generally straight forward, with minimal associated downtime, making them an attractive and popular treatment option.
PDO (Polydioxanone) threads are made from a resorbable polymer suture-like material, which is both durable and flexible, making it an ideal material for minimally invasive skin rejuvenation, for tightening and for lifting. PDO thread material is not new and has been used in medical surgery for decades.
There are 3 main types of PDO threads currently available:
• Mono threads- smooth threads the thickness of fine hair inserted via a fine needle that mainly tighten the skin and provide a small amount of lift.
• Cogged threads or barbed threads, which hook onto the soft tissue under the skin’s surface providing greater support and lift to sagging tissue.
• Screw threads – have intertwined threads which are coiled around the insertion needle. These threads help stimulate good volume restoration to sunken areas of skin, for example, in the temples.
We use Polydioxanone (PDO) Threads which are resorbable threads manufactured in Korea.
Our brand is widely available throughout the world, gaining the CE approval mark and full TGA approval.
Generally, results last for between 18 and 24 months. This will depend on your health, well-being and diet. Radical weight variations or significant health issues will impact longevity.
The PDO thread material is metabolised, broken down and excreted like any other waste product in the body. What remains is new Type 3 Collagen mesh in the treated area giving the tissues a more lifted and youthful appearance.
• Skin rejuvenation as the thread helps with collagen stimulation
• Skin tightening & lifting
• Increased volume – due to facial volume loss associated with ageing
Mono threads: Numbing cream is applied to the treatment area for 20 mins prior to your procedure, to decrease treatment discomfort. The area is then thoroughly cleansed with surgical-grade skin disinfectant. Multiple fine needles containing fine threads similar to a hair shaft are inserted into the skin. The needles are then removed, leaving the embedded fine thread underneath the skin.
Long threads: This is a slightly more invasive, totally sterile procedure.
The treatment begins by us running through your consent form and then we will have a careful and thorough discussion, using a mirror, about what you would like to achieve from your treatment. Using a marker pencil, we will draw a guide to the position of each of the threads, to be placed bi-laterally on your face, which will produce a balanced optimal result. During our consultation, we will discuss the procedure with you in depth.
Both PDO Mono and Long thread treatments can take between about 30 to 40 minutes, depending on the number of threads required for each specific procedure.
Apart from the initial sting from the local anaesthetic injections, the whole treatment area is numb, so this procedure is generally pain free but can be a little uncomfortable. You may be sore and ache somewhat afterwards, and we advise you to take paracetamol if you need some pain relief.
Mono Threads: Initially you might observe a correction in the treated area, however, this is essentially due to swelling and will subside. This is not evidence of the eventual results of the procedure since the mono threads take approximately 12 weeks to stimulate an increase in collagen production.
Long Threads: Because of the mechanical lifting nature of the barbed long threads, a clinical result is apparent immediately. Over the following 3 months, post treatment, you will also start to notice a significant improvement in skin quality, in the areas treated due to collagen stimulation.
Long thread lifts are not suitable for patients with excessive skin laxity. This is generally because they have little facial fat or collagen beneath the skin, and as such, too little for the barbed thread to be embedded within and to ‘grip’ and produce a lift. In these cases, a surgical facelift may provide a better result and be a more sensible, financially viable, option.
Facial Areas:
• Under eye skin sagging, wrinkles & eye bags
• Wrinkles around lips
• Smoothing lines and wrinkles
• Brow Lift
• Lower face Lift
• Facial volume replacement
• Alternative for those not wanting dermal fillers
• Jowls
• Nasolabial folds
• Neck Lift/Rejuvenation
• Skin tightening
• Forehead lifting
We will undertake a full assessment of your face or neck, taking into consideration your age, the area to be treated and what we are aiming to achieve.
Selecting the appropriate thread for you is vital to achieve the desired outcome as well as fulfilling your expectations.
Patients with good soft tissue volume, less facial fat and a small amount of skin to be lifted will benefit most from thread lifts.
The number of mono, or long, or a combination of both types, is determined by the amount of lift and improvement you desire.
I couldn't recommend Pom Pom Aesthetics enough. The level of care, thought, and professionalism is outstanding.
Many people worry about having a frozen face after having wrinkle-relaxing treatments. It was one of my biggest fears, but Penny assured me that my face had a small amount of movement, and yet I looked refreshed and younger. It was my first experience, and I was so happy, I will be back in three months time.
Penny from Pom Pom Aesthetics has been my go-to aesthetic practitioner. I trust this clinic and highly recommend their services.
